BU Student Attacked in Alleged Hate Crime Philadelphia Daily News 19.AUG.08

Levi Lee and Bryson Mills arrived on the doorstep of the Philadelphia Daily News last week looking bruised and battered. Even hard-bitten reporters - their eyes widening - seemed taken aback by the appearance of the two young men.

Police say at approximately 10:16 AM, the PNC Bank located at Main & Market Street contacted Bloomsburg Police in reguards to a suspicious package. The package was a red nylon lunch bag. The bag was located on top of a trash receptacle located next to the ATM machine.
Police say for safety purposes the bank was evacuated along with traffic and pedestrians being detoured around the bank. The Bloomsburg Police K9 bomb dog was utilized to conduct a search of the bag for explosives. No explosives were discovered.
Bloomsburg Police were assisted by Columbia County Adult Probation, State Police, Bloomsburg Fire Department and Bloomsburg Fire Police. Traffic to Main Street was opened at 11:21 AM.
Car Stolen during Jo-Jo’s Pizza Delivery Eric Bower 17.AUG.08

A delivery driver from Jo-Jo’s Pizza had his car stolen during a delivery early Sunday morning around 2:25 AM. Delivery driver Chris Harding of Bloomsburg said he was delivering pizza to 115 East 4th Street when the theft occurred. Harding said he heard a car start and then saw his Ford Explorer driving away. Harding said his Ford Explorer made a right on East Street heading south. Harding said that he was able to find the car with a friend later that day near East Fourth and Spruce Street and that nothing was taken. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania's incoming freshmen and transfer students will meet members of the Huskies football team, cheerleaders, band and the mascot, Roongo, at a pep rally Thursday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. in Nelson Field House.
"We thought this would be a great way to welcome new students, get them excited about BU and tie into some school spirit," said Maramonne Houseknecht, coordinator of new student orientation. [read more]
According to police reports on June 25th at 2:02 AM police were dispatched to a suspicious activity / loud party complaint at the Old Schoolhouse Apartments on East First Street. Upon arrival on scene officers could observe several individuals standing outside the Old Schoolhouse Apartments. As officers pulled up to the entrance of the building, a few individuals fled into the apartment building. When police entered the apartment complex loud voices and music could be heard coming from the second floor. Police determined the voices and music were coming from a second floor apartment. On August 13th around 4:30 PM Bloomsburg Police were contacted by Michael Coates age 25 of 329 East Street in Bloomsburg. Coates was making a complaint about threatening text messages he was receiving. Coates eventually presented himself at the Bloomsburg Police station. While talking to officers about the messages he was receiving on his cell phone, he handed the phone to officers.
While trying to locate the threatening messages officers viewed a pornographic photo of a young girl having oral sex with a male. Coates was then escorted to an interview room. Coates was read his rights. Coates told police the male performing the sex act was him. He said it occurred at the bathroom of the Bloomsburg Town Park. [read more]
